Hi all,

Welcome to the Coonamessett Farm Spring newsletter; only four weeks behind (spring is behind; not the newsletter). This is the week we all been waiting for all winter. Yes, the week AFTER the Royal Couple visit Australia to examine kangaroos and belt down some Foster’s (Look for Allison in the photos). However, it is also the week the farm opens its doors/gates to our members. This coming Friday, April whatever, will be opening day. There will be marching bands, circus clowns, hot-air balloons, fireworks, and a poetry reading. Of course these events will be happening somewhere else; certainly not at our farm. The café will be serving our full menu on weekends; during the week its beverages and pastries. There is plenty of good picking of highly nutritious greens in the greenhouses (how apropos). Greens serve as a counterbalance to the pastries as discussed in my new book “How To Justify What You Want To Eat”. 

We hope that all of you that are afraid to mail in your memberships, a form of lukalpostalphobia, will come on in to re-join in person. One of the many advantages of memberships is that there will be a significant savings in attending Jamaican Buffet night. Member prices for Jamaican Night will remain at $21.95 for adults; non-members will see a price rise to $24.95. Supporters can bring in up to four at the lower rate; higher membership levels will have no limit at that rate. We will not be selling farm memberships on Jamaican Nights between 5 and 7 pm. These changes should cut back waiting in line by decreasing attendance of those that do not support the farm.

Stan will be running a series of workshops for members every Saturday morning at the farm starting this Saturday, April 26th, from 10:30 to 11:30. The first four workshops will be 1) Starting from scratch-your first garden; 2) Composting ins and outs; 3) Pest prevention; and 4) Season extension. I will be holding a matching set of workshops at 6 pm- 1) Choosing your first beer; 2) The ins and outs of rum; 3) Why rye whiskey; and 4) Extending the evening with fine brandies. The latter are invite only; BYOB.

We are looking for a couple of volunteers to help with animals. When you come by the farm, when we are open, track down Renee and she can explain the help we are looking for with the critters.

Mother’s Day is just a few weeks away and we plan to replicate our very successful buffet. The menu should be posted on the web site shortly. 

The Coonamessett Artisans’ Fair is coming up the Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend. Farm member artisans get the first four-foot table free with membership. For more information and an email reservation form, contact Nannette at fair@coonamessett.net. Please contact her soon and provide information about your wares for maximum publicity of the event. The deadline for signing up is the weekend before the Fair. The Artisans’ Fair will run rain or shine, sheltered under the pavilion, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and we’ll have a special lunch selection to add to the festive air. Plus, we’ll open the Cone-a-messett Ice Cream Stand for the season and have special evening buffets from 5 to 8 Friday and Saturday Night of Memorial Day Weekend.
